Mechanical Design Engineer - Manufacturing

Location: Onsite (limited hybrid working)

Job Type: Full Time – Permanent

Salary Range: £37,000 – £42,000 per annum

What you’ll do

Functional Area: R&D – Physics and Engineering

Reports to: Senior Mechanical Engineer

Sphere Fluidics are seeking a versatile Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to new product introduction (NPI) and manage the sub-contract manufacturing of our world leading instruments. 

Reporting to a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that will be developing unique life-science instrumentation that combines complex microfluidic, optical, and mechanical assemblies to deliver Picodroplet technology. You will assist in product R&D and design optimisation, and help develop test rigs and fixtures for testing and validation. Furthermore, you will be responsible for controlling and compiling design information issued to manufacturing partners, internal supply chain and technical support teams. 

  

What we’re looking for 

 Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • DfMA of precision metal and plastic components and assemblies. 
  • Material, manufacturing process, and supplier selection. 
  • Creation of logical assembly drawings of complex sub-assemblies.  
  • Maintaining accurate BOMs, Manufacturing instructions, and Quality documents. 
  • Manage and take ownership of the engineering change processes (ECR and ECO). 
  • Assist Supply Chain and Technical Support with Root Cause and CAPA processes. 
  • Develop test rigs and fixtures for prototyping and testing. 
  • NPI design optimisation and transfer to manufacture. 

Skills and Experience 

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar. 
  • Highly confident in SolidWorks CAD for parametric design and assembly drawings. 
  • Experience using Solidworks PDM or equivalent systems. 
  • Proven experience with using different materials, manufacturing processes, and applying GD&T for component and assembly design.  
  • Knowledge of Engineering Control, CAPA and Root Cause processes. 
  • Meticulous and accurate with details and documentation, and able to conduct technical communication fluently. 
  • Proactive nature and willingness to learn multidisciplinary technology. 

Advantageous 

  • Previous experience working as a manufacturing, quality, or design engineer in a scientific low-mid volume production product. 
  • Experience of scientific or laboratory instrument or equipment design and manufacture. 
  • Interest in Biology, Chemistry, or Biotechnology. 
  • Advanced knowledge or experience with any of the following: Mechanical, Optical, Microfluidic, Pneumatic, PCB, components and assemblies. 
  • Experience of using milling machines, lathes, power tools, and electronic soldering. 
  • Willingness for occasional travel to manufacturing partners and suppliers.
